Human Rights activist Mohamed Ould Mkheitir has been jailed in Mauritania and is awaiting trial on charges of apostasy.  This charge can carry the death penalty.  Crowds in Mauritania have already demanded his immediate execution.

What was his crime?  Ould Mkheitir published a call for the end of racial discrimination.  Mauritanian society is divided into privileged groups and oppressed people.  This system is sustained by tradition and by Maliki religious texts. Speaking out against this systematic discrimination has infuriated the elites and those who defend fundamentalist religion and tradition at all costs.

When Mkehitir published his call for equal rights for all Mauritanians he immediately began receiving death threats.  His employer fired him.  Even his family has disowned him under public pressure.

Stand up for human rights! Please help Ould Mkhetir by signing this petition.

End the persecution of those who advocate for human rights.  Abolish article 306 in the Mauritanian criminal code.
